F/L Brendan Eamon Fergus Finucane

Dublin, Ireland

Spitfire Mk Vb AB852 & AB972

No. 452 Squadron RAAF

RAF Kenley

September-October 1941

Brendan Finucane joined the Royal Air Force in 1938. In 1940 he was posted to 65 Squadron flying Spitfires. He scored his first aerial victory during the height of the Battle of Britain and by the end of the year his score stood at five. In April of 1941 "Paddy" Finucane was sent to 452 Sqn, the first RAAF fighter squadron in Fighter Command. The squadron became operational in July and Finucane raised his score to 17 by his 21st birthday (13 October 1941). After a rest he was given command of 602 Squadron and in June 1942 he became the youngest Wing Commander in the RAF (Hornchurch). Just two weeks later Finucane's luck ran out and his Spitfire went down in the Channel, taking the highest scoring Irish ace of World War Two with it.
